Each Way Bet

An each way bet is one in which the bettor combines two types of bets, one for a win in the competition and one for the betted participant to place in the contest. Common sports that utilise this form of betting are horse racing and football.

The easiest way to think of this type of bet is that it is actually two identically-sized bets in one. For example, if you place a £20 each way bet, you are in fact placing a £10 bet for your selection to win and a £10 bet for your horse or team to place.

If you were to place a £20 each way bet on a horse with 8-1 odds to win a 12-horse race and it did so, you would take home £120. Of that total, £80 would come from winning the £10 portion at 8-1 odds, £20 would be the result of claiming the 2-1 odds for the other £10 for the horse to place, and £20 would be the original bet being returned.

If that horse finished second or third, you would take home £30, or a £10 profit, from winning the 2-1 odds for placing, but losing the £10 half of the £20 each way bet for the horse to win.

Football games may be bet on the same way, whether it is for a club to win a league title or place in the league race or for the team’s performance in a cup competition.
